More than three decades later one of the attendees at the 1968 reunion got the idea that it was time to do it again. Nancy Cooke, the daughter of Frank Uttley, organized the day at the Waterworks Park in St Thomas. The invitations went out and fifty-two people came for the day, all with a connection to Nathan Uttley.
July 12, 2003
A very important date to remember! We are going to have the "Grandaddy" of allUTTLEY Family Reunion.
A "must attend" for a new family photo.I have recently discovered a new friend, Bruce Uttley. He has after many, many hours of his time, a "labour of love" I'm sure, put together what I call a book of the Uttley family tree. He has put it on the Internet.
A small Sample:
We are sending out a very special invitation to all the Uttleys and their descendants to attend the most special "blow out", family reunion of all time.
We now know that there were three Uttley brothers who came to Canada in the late 1850's. Jonathan, Nathan and Samuel all lived in Waterloo County, Ontario and raised their families there. Nathan and Samuel were both stationary engineers, an occupation which seems to be carried on by quite a few of Nathan's descendants to this day. The brothers were sons of William Uttley and Ann Girling. William and Ann had twelve children and lived in Wheatacre, Norfolk County, England. We will supply coffee and tea, plus lemonade. The meal (once again) due to the Uttley family tradition will be Pot Luck. This always gives the ladies (who as we all know, come from a long line of super cooks) a chance to show off. The space I have rented is a pavilion, so there is a large root with picnic tables provided. I have acquired a map to explain additional facilities. We truly hope you can "make, borrow, or steal" the time to attend. It'll be so great to meet our newly found relatives!
- We will be taking a family photo, so your attendance is really very important. Our volunteer photographer Tom, Ron or Terry Howald will organize us into some state of order. All those who wish to acquire a copy, will be asked to leave their name and address plus a small mailing fee.
- We are planning to put on an auction sale for the children. No, sorry, we are not auctioning off the dear, darling little children! We are asking that you donate new or used toys that the children themselves can bid on. It is not often that city kids get the chance to go to auction sales, let alone a chance to bid. In this case the parents will be the bystanders as their children will be doing the bidding, but they can assist if they are needed by their children. We would like to keep the bidding down to a couple of "bucks", so bring change. Bring lots of change, depending on how agressively you wish your child to bid! Money earned can go towards the rent of the park space, photo copying, mailing expenses, plus whatever other expenses arise.
Anyhow, to sum it all up, it's going to be a really marvelous event! It's definitely going to be a day to remember! We will, with great anticipation, be looking forward to seeing you. So, until July 12/2003,
- David Bott has been so kind as to volunteer to be our auctioneer. He also has some games for us.
- Carolann Bott, has kindly offered to be our valuable treasurer. (To our volunteers: please bring your expense receipts to Carolann to be reimbursed.)
- Jeff Cooke has graciously offered to assist David Bott. With these two guys working together, I know that it will be lots of fun. In fact it might even be hilarious.
It is going to be a great auction! - Raymond Yule, has kindly volunteered to organize games and races for us. And, we know that games and races are always fun! They are expecially exciting when Ray, with his winning personality, is the ambitious organizer. Your donated toys can also be used as the prizes for the games and races. Ray is also out mailing/contact person for Toronto and surrounding area.
- Bruce Uttley has also kindly offered to be a mailing/contact person. We will have the privilege of becoming acquainted with his branch of the Nathan Uttley family Uttleys. Furthermore, with his great knowledge of the Uttley family tree, there is no telling who he might find to join us!
- Gord and Barb Crannie, as faithful as ever, will be our ever loving mailing/contact for the U.S. people.
- I, Nancy Cooke, being the lazy person that I am, will do the easy stuff, like the St. Thomas/London area.
- Ron Cooke will do coffee, tea and lemonade.
- Bill McDill from Ottawa, Ontario, (also a newly found relative thanks to Bruce Uttley) has cheerfully agreed to be our "slap-happy-schlurping-name-tag-sticker-on-er" person. He has also volunteered to be the mailing/contact person for his branch of the Uttley family.
Your hosts are:
Stay healthy, and happy,
with lots of love to each of you.
